Jheri Bellard |
As one of six children, growing up for Jheri Bellard was always a contest with her siblings. Actually, life's challenges have been just another competition for her including high school basketball, track and cross country and a tri-athlete for 8 years. But, the '08 Ms. Bikini Texas and Model Texas Champion has faced even greater obstacles including battling Hashimoto's disease for over 10 years. It is a disorder in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland often resulting in inflammation and leading to an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).
But like all of the challenges she has faced in life, Jheri moves forward with new goals including obtaining her Masters Degree in strength conditioning and desire to work with |
collegiate athletes to improve their performance skills. And, this Lafayette native has already appeared in 8 television commercials, 3 movies and several fashion and commercial print advertisements.
Jheri is now preparing for Model Universe in Miami and says, "I am ready to take my modeling and acting skills to the next level." And, if her accomplishments so far are any indication, expect to see this Louisiana belle everywhere. |

Kicking Cousins |
Two of the hottest new competitors on the Fitness Universe Tour are cousins with similarities more than most sisters. Jessica Kenney & Sarah Cincotta started competed last season and relied heavily upon their high school and collegiate cheerleading experience. Both ladies have ramped up their competition regimen this season with outstanding performances at the recent Atlantic. And at the Capitol shows Jessica won her class and overall Ms. Bikini crown!
Jessica is from South Boston and a graduate of Assumption College where she earned her masters degree. She's currently a pediatric occupational therapist. Sarah is wealth manager from Bedford, Massachusetts, and graduated from Bentley College. Both competitors are avid yoga enthusiasts and |
include it in their training. Both ladies are married and wanted to continue competitive performance athletics after college, so fitness competitions were the natural choice. Jessica explains, " To me, competing in Fitness America was the only choice. I love the fit and feminine and attainable look that it asks for. I can still have a life and compete too!"
But the mutual support of competing together makes the experience even more worthwhile, attests Sarah. " Our Moms are sisters and I feel like we are too! Competing is incredible! I only wish I had started sooner!" But, her ambitions and reasons for competing are even more personal. "Since my husband was in Iraq a while ago, this would have been a great way for me to set goals and take my mind off of things! I am here to stay. I have caught the competition bug"
Both Jessica and Sarah currently train with Savage Performance Training which focuses on fitness routines and are preparing for the Fitness Universe Pageant in Miami. But nothing motivates them more than training and competing together. Says Sarah, "I love competing with Jess. She was also a cheerleader so her tradition of performance and showing a positive spirit continues." |

New Testing Rules |
It was announced this week that Urinalysis Drug Testing with be implemented at Figure Universe in Miami. Because of an influx of competitors whom have competed predominately in organizations which condone or "turn a blind eye" to steroid and drug use among their competitors, serious testing will help to ensure that these and all figure competitors are, in fact, clean of performing enhancing substances. Of course, all of the figure competitors whom are changing federations and want to join Figure |
Universe are welcome but must be drug free. So, all Figure Universe competitors will be asked to supply a urine sample immediately following their Registration on Thursday morning, June 18. Positive laboratory test results will be posted and the respective competitor(s) will be disqualified. A complete list of banned substances is available. Fitness Universe Tour events (Fitness, Ms. Bikini, Figure, Model and Musclemania) are for natural, drug-free competitors who live a clean and healthy lifestyle.

But she has parlayed her fitness credentials into a prominent fitness and bikini model career, as well as a skilled personal trainer and educator. During the 1994-1995 season, Niccole was a member of the NBA World Champion Chicago Bulls cheerleading squad and later part of the Bally's Total Fitness Performance Team. She won the '04 and '07 Ms. Fitness Illinois and Fitness Midwest Pageant among other shows.

Having Too Much Fun! |
Competing for more than 10 years, Andi Martin is easily considered a veteran and role model on Fitness Universe Tour. And, at the '08 Fitness America Pageant in Las Vegas, she placed 2nd among the most competitive line-up seen in years. "I had a blast in Vegas! It was a very relaxing trip for me and very rewarding in the end!," exclaimed Andi. "Although I would love to win a big show one day, I was thrilled to take 2nd. It was a really hard show with the BEST girls around!"
The 36 year old mother and wife qualified for the Classic Division, but chose to challenge herself. She explained, "Overall, I'm super excited about the year I had. I placed 1st at Kumite, 2nd at Universe, 3rd in New York and |
| 2nd in Vegas. I'll take that! But I'm most proud that I competed in the Open Division and did so well! I don't want to take anything away from the Classic competitors. They were amazing. I just didn't feel that I had yet accomplished what I wanted in the Open Division. I'm still not sure I have, but I'll decide that at a later date. I am probably not going to retire - I'm having too much fun! But I'm not sure what will be up next for me. I am planning a new routine for this season and will be back on stage soon." |

Firery Dedication |
Winning the Fitness America Pageant for some is the culmination of years of training, competing and sacrifice. But for reigning champion Lindsay Messina it was something more and special among her already successful athletic and career achievements. She's explains, "Being among the Top Five at Fitness Universe was an honor. Being crowned Ms. Fitness America is a complete fulfillment of joy and thrill."
The New York personal trainer was a nationally ranked high school sprinter ran track for 6 years and still holds many records. Lindsay's early athletic dedication helped to develop discipline in other aspects |
of her life especially in her work ethic. "During the week I train 15 clients on a regular basis, teach 3 classes a week consisting of boot camp, circuit training and full body lifting," Lindsay said. "I also help women with all types of concerns from family to living a healthy lifestyle through emails, phone consultations or one on one meetings". But, the 5'2", 110 lbs., 24 year old fitness star credits her mother for setting for creating the right environment and Lindsays says, "As I grew up, my mom had a full time job, had three kids to take care for, a house to clean which she did twice a day, took us everywhere - sports, friends house, the mall - you name it and always helped with our homework. She was a Super Mom and definitely is my personal role model."
Linday's training regimen is intense "I workout 5-6 days a week and always switch my routines. Mondays - Boxing with a heavy bag; Leg workout with high reps and low weights. Tuesday - Jump rope with a full body workout with heavy weights, 8-10 reps. Wednesday - Functional and plyo training with no weights, all explosive exercises (ex. jump squats, split lunges, exploding push ups, planks). Thursday - Boxing with a heavy bag and all core strengthening. I do planks, tuck jumps, abs with the medicine ball and leg raises. Fridays - Cardio either outside or on the treadmill and interval sprints. If I'm on the treadmill, I do one minute intervals for 30 minutes and finish-up with the Stairmaster for 15 minutes. Outside I do an hour run within the hour. I also do hill sprints for 30 minutes. Saturdays - I take a spinning class and do an upper body workout. Lats, rear delts, and lower back. Sunday Off!"
Lindsay has become a media darling having appeared on numerous fitness magazine covers, profiles, commercials, advertising campaigns and yet speaking with her, you quickly get the impression that its just the beginning for her. "I want to be a writer for nationally ranked fitness magazines, land some more covers, host any type of fitness related shows, own my own workout facility, have my own line and write a Book". Whewww! But Lindsay says that her ultimate goals are more lofty. "I really want to become a role model for women to be natural and reach every goal which they set there minds. And, ultimately, I want to have a family and live a happy life".
Lindsay's career is already meteoric and will continue to climb. And, she's taking off this season to focus on her commercial career. But with her competitive athletic spirit, discipline and dedication, look forward to seeing her back on the competition stage again soon.

Camp Savage Series |
The temperature was freezing but the energy was hot at the recent Camp Savage in Boston. Fifty aspiring competitors from throughout the country and Canada attended the weekend extravaganza which included coaches such as FAP stars Lindsay Messina, Megan Hoffman, Amber Ameredes, Annette Perry and many more. The weekend started Friday night with some dancing and "getting to know you" games. Saturday was jam packed with training, posing, nutrition lectures, individual assessments, visualization techniques, suit selections and routines! Then, on Saturday night, limousines took the campers to dinner and night club for an evening of dancing and laughter! All the girls really loosened up! One camper said, "I am dancing with Lindsay Messina - Pinch me!" Sunday morning started with Yoga followed by more show prep topics! However, the highlight of the weekend was an entertaining skit of what Team Savage calls "post traumatic show disorder" and how to prevent it!
FAP Champion Lindsay Messina, Annette Perry and others took part in this acting segment and Lindsay actually stuffed her face in a chocolate cake! The skit was to warn girls of what can happen if they diet too hard or too excessively for a show. But they have obviously mastered the art of competing and staying healthy and all the veterans were on hand to share their feelings of the importance of a balanced life while competing. The weekend ended with a spirit segment where girls created their own Savage Cheer - to show unity, trust and balance.
Now in its 13th season, the Camp Savage Series has many other dates being scheduled including weekend programs in Chicago, Toronto and West Palm Beach with coaches FAP Champions Dawn Butterfield & Lindsay Messina, former FUP Champ Wendi West and reigning Ms. Bikini Universe Kelly Schrek.

So Who Was Judge #4 |
There she was - one the most talented fitness competitors to ever grace the stage. Winning the Fitness Universe Pageant an unprecedented 3 times and vying to snatch the prestigious Fitness America Pageant which has eluded her throughout her competitive career. Sheri Vuvick truly has "the whole package" including athletic talent, choreography, grace and natural beauty. She's been a Top 5 Finalist for the past 10 years. So, how could this epitome of women's fitness be scored so low and to place 7th in Las Vegas ? It's simple - Judge #4 ranked Sheri (and, 2007 FAP Champ Else Lautala) with incredibly low scores in both the Fitness and Swimsuit Rounds making it mathematically impossible to crack the Top 5.
Bill Whalen was Judge #4 and has over 25 years experience as a professional cheer coach and has choreographed many NCAA and NFL bowl game halftime shows. Like all Fitness Universe Tour judges, he is respected in his field of expertise which also represent dance, gymnastics, choreography and acrobatics discipline. Also, fitness journalists, commercial photographers or past national or international fitness champions are utilized as FUT judges. For each show, potential judges' resumes are reviewed carefully for the breath of their experience and professionalism and screened for integrity and reputation. And, because national & international judging panels are changed for each major show to prevent latent bias, there is never the same judging panel from year to year. And, in nearly all instances, the judges do not know one another other than by public recognition.
The Fitness Universe Tour respects Bill Whalen's opinions and stands by his scores. And, there is no doubt that Lindsay Messina and the other FAP Top 5 Finalists are worthy winners. However, the issue of aberrant low or high scores suggest that a revised tabulation method should be implemented. So, beginning at the Universe Weekend in June, the Fitness, Ms. Bikini and Figure Divisions will be judged using a weighted average scoring method. This will ensure that low and high scores are included in the results but with relevance and fairness to the other judging scores.
Your comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Sibling Support |
One of Mexico 's hottest figure competitors brings to the stage a flawlessly shaped body surpassed only by her gorgeous looks. Faviola Zavala has been competing for 5 years and consistently is a finalist including the 2008 Figure Latino in Mexico City and America in Las Vegas . At 5'8", 65 kg, the 30 year old trainer comes from an athletic family with most notably her brother Fabian a former Mexican bodybuilding star. But whereas her siblings cut their careers short to pursue business ventures and begin their own families, Faviola remains stedfast to her training and competing. She explains, "I really enjoy the whole scene. Training and
preparing for shows keep me motivated. Who knows where it will lead me or what else I |
| will do with my life. But, for right now, I just like competing. Going to the US and standing on stage with the best natural girls in the sport really keeps me motivated." And just maybe Faviola's growing prominence in competitive fitness may lead her brother Fabian to resume serious training, too, and take the stage once again.

Real Life Diva |
No newcomer to showbiz, Kristal Marshall walked onto the Ms. Bikini America stage with a plethora of experience unlike any other competitor. The 24 year old former WWW Diva and television interviewer has also appeared on NBC's "Deal or No Deal", Bravo's "Project Runway", MTV's "Celebrity Deathmatch" host, 50 Cents "Candy Shop" video, was the 2003 Miss California Runner-Up and much more. Just four months earlier Kristal gave birth to a baby boy but in winning the show, you would never have known. She was stunningly beautiful in both the Sportswear and Swimwear Rounds presenting herself with class and pizazz! The Colorado native grew up as a Navy brat and was always athletic. |
Kristal says, "I have the experience of a pageant girl, the body of an athlete and the dedication of a mother. I want my son to be proud of his mother and to know that everything that I did was for him." With WWE wrestler and husband Bobby Lashley in tow, Kristal certainly made her entire family proud in Las Vegas. |

Lucky Lindsay |
In one of the most exciting Fitness America Pageant's ever, Lindsay Messina continued her winning roll in Las Vegas. Her exciting routine was powerful, athletic, entertaining and simply fun to watch. But most of all, Lindsay's personality captured the judges attention in both the Fitness & Swimsuit Rounds and was on top in the Interview Round, too. The competition was intense which included 3x FUP Champ Sheri Vuvick and '07 FAP Champ Else Lautala neither of whom cracked the Top 5 because the scores for both posted by Judge #4 were extremely low in comparison to the other judges. But, two impressive achievements in the show were Andi Martin and Tiffani Bachus, both of whom both could rightly have competed in the Classic Division, dared themselves and took home the #2 and #3 spots. Amber Ameredes who for the first time was a Top 5 Finalist last year dropped to 14th. Fitness America Weekend moved to the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas this year with nearly 400 Fitness, Ms. Bikini, Figure, Model and Musclemania America competitors from around the world. Complete results are posted and photos will be added later this week.

Dancing Queen |
She claims to just want to "continue to live a happy, healthy and fit lifestyle" But, fitness veteran Annette Perry had plenty to cheer about after winning the recent Fitness New York Championships in Brooklyn. At 26 year old, 5', 110 lbs., she has over 5 years competition experience and brought to the stage a whole new routine to conquer the other competitors. Annette has been dancing since she was 3 years old and is a former NFL New England Patriots cheerleader. She also won this years Ms. Bikini Universe (Short Class) and was a Top 5 Finalist at the Fitness Universe. But, she asserts, "I would like to take competing to the next level and win a national title." Annette earned her BA in Political Science and an emphasis on America Legal Studies and professional works in group benefits sales.

Backstage Chaos |
What goes on behind the scenes at fitness shows is highlighted by chaos in the dressing rooms. At the recent Fitness New York, over 75 intensively competitive ladies were packed into a large chorus room lined with full length mirrors, howling blowing hair dryers, cosmetics cases everywhere, hanger racks full of bikinis and performance outfits and enough shoes to fill a Macy's department store. But the energetic mix of camaraderie and competitiveness generates a spirit unmatched in ladies athletics. Said Koren Henderson following the show, "As a competitor, I really appreciated the bigger venue, mirrors in the changing room and the great communication backstage." Sure, there's always a bit of cattiness but it is easily overshadowed by a bevy of positive feminine vibes. Now we prepare for the Fitness America Weekend where over 300 fitness, bikini, figure and sport model ladies will energize a series of massive dressing rooms at the annual year-end extravaganza.

Matrimonial Training |
After he sat through the Fitness Universe Pageant, Top 5 Finalist Brooke Johnson convinced her fiance Chris Griffin to train for Musclemania America. "We thought that it would be a great idea to train together for the Musclemania and Fitness America shows in Vegas because we both have backgrounds in fitness," Brooke said. "We thought that if we didn't kill each other training for the show that we could handle the ups and downs of marriage." Brooke continued, "Living and training together has allowed us to keep each other motivated and on track for the show because we work out and grocery shop together, prepare food for one another and understand the sacrifices each of us are making to get ready for competition."
Chris has competed in some localKentucky bodybuilding competitions, but MusclemaniaAmerica will be his first national level event. Brooke is a seasoned fitness veteran with many national and international Fitness Universe Tour Top 5 Finalist credits to your resume. Regardless, it is Brooke and Chris' mutual competitiveness that keeps them both on track. Brooke explains, "Chris' discipline with training and dieting has kept me on track for Vegas and with my fitness background, I'll be sure to kick his cardio training into gear as the show nears (Chris hates cardio). No doubt that living together and training together has its challenges, but nothing outweighs the rewards."

Planning for Baby Jacob |
From the contest stage to the nursery, former Ms. Bikini America and Universe winner Danielle Glynn has just a couple of months left before becoming a mother for the first time. "Baby Jacob will be here just a few weeks before Christmas! What a fun gift!, says Danielle "I have about 12 weeks left (last trimester) and then I'll be a mom! The pregnancy is going well. I feel great most of the time, I can still jog quite a bit, lift light weights, but mostly my workouts are walking."But even the exuberance of bearing her first child isn't restraining Danielle from planning her return to the competition scene. "I think next year I'll do that Fitness Dixie show," she claims. "It's much easier to drive a couple hoursflying with an infant. I |
just want to do one more fitness routine and then maybe I'll be done with competitions. It's going be hard to train & compete. Most competitors can travel with their family or drop the kid off at their mom's. Ah well, I had a GREAT run since 2004."
No doubt, times and circumstances change throughout our lives, so somehow we won't count out Danielle just yet. |

Marathon Woman |
One the hottest new competitors on the Fitness Universe Tour has also just started running in marathons. But taking on two athletic challenges seems to fit the competitive temperament of Cristin Kiburz. “"I’'ve always wanted to run a marathon and I’'ve always wanted to get back into the fitness industry, so no better time than the present,"” states Cristin. Recently, she scratched goal #1 off of her to do list by completing her first race, the New Mexico Marathon. "“I can’t begin to tell you the feeling of accomplishment I felt when I crossed the finish line. Knowing I had just run 26.2 miles, something that only about 1% of the population does, is an amazing feeling. If you ever want to test your inner strength, then run a marathon. You can train as hard as you want but in the end it’s mind over body - literally.”"
Cristin recently landed Flex Power, the sports cream of the NBA, as her key sponsor to compete at the Fitness New York and Fitness America Weekend in Las Vegas . She explains, "“I must admit, I have the marathon bug and would love to qualify for the Boston Marathon, but first things first. I’'m now switching gears and focusing on my upcoming fitness shows." Cristin and her husband recently moved to Albuquerque from New Orleans where she was a cast member on the local Cox Sports Network show, "Get Fit with Leslie" . And, she will soon launch her own website and Get Fitness Campaign next year. In the meantime, Cristin has dedicated this year to complete her still lingering competitive fitness goals.

My Inspiration, My Friend |
Like a kid who has the poster of an athletic role mounted on her wall, sometimes its not much different even for fitness competitors. Recently, we received a letter from Laura Blocher , a relative newcomer to the competitive fitness scene who placed 22nd at both the 2006 & 2007 Fitness America Pageant. She explains how shes been inspired for many years by three time Fitness Universe Pageant Champion Sheri Vucick . "Ever since my first show in the 2006 FAP, I got a poster of the show in the mail and saw this |
girl on the poster. It was Sheri. When I got to the competition in Hollywood, people thought that I was Sheri. I felt so honored because I followed her competitions when I first started out. We quickly became friends through e-mail and then I was determined to train with her."
"So this past summer for my graduation present from College, I went and trained with Sheri for a week in Pittsburgh! I was so excited and nervous all at the same time. Our training began the first hour that I was there - we wasted no time. She helped me with everything: diet, stage presence, my walk, attitude, new workout program and, of course, a killer routine. I can say that I have never had a workout quite like Sheri's. It was hard and she definitely pushed me to my limits. And, there is one trick that Sheri does and we call it her 'Secret Weapon!' I now do this trick but I do it a little different."
"I was so pumped that Sheri wanted to help me because I look up to her in so many ways. She is my inspiration. One day I can only hope that I can accomplish what she has done. The experience and knowledge that I have gain in the course of a week with Sheri has forever changed my life and my fitness career to an unreachable level. I am ready to take on the challenge this year at FAP 2008 in Las Vegas. All I know is that I am ready to bring everything I got to grasp that top spot. My friendship with Sheri will be one that will last for a life time."
It is a rare occasion when a new fitness competitor walks on the stage and sweeps a show, especially at the caliber of the Fitness America Pageant. It usually takes guidance, support, coaching, inspiration and lots of experience to make a fitness star. Even Sheri competed for five years before she won at the national level. So, when a self made superstar like Sheri takes a competitor under her wing, it can only help to launch another star. She said of Laura, "She is so talented and such a hard worker, I can't wait to see her perform."

Mixing Pageantry and Athleticism |
| Winning both the Ms. Bikini & Model Texas shows recently was a stunning sports model from Louisiana. At a striking 5'9" tall, Jheri Bellard has the grace and beauty of a pageant queen mixed with the body of a competitive athlete. "Through these competitions, I hope to become a strong competitor and internationally known fitness model," said Jheri. The 31 year old physician recruiter enjoys acting and modeling and has already appeared in eight commercials, three movies, numerous commercial modeling print campaigns. Jheri also has extensive competitive experience in basketball, cross country, track, triathlons, volleyball and softball. But her biggest challenge has been managing Hoshimoto's disease which affects .

the pituitary gland.
Jheri explained, "I want to become a role model for others with the disease and show how they too

Savage Weekend in Miami |
At the recent Universe Weekend in Miami, fitness coach Cathy Savage assembled a team of over 50 competitors who participated in the Fitness, Ms. Bikini, Figure and Model Universe shows. Each year, fitness photographer John Lathrop gets up at 5 AM to meet the ladies on the beach for a group sunrise photo. Beyond that the camaraderie was infectious for these ladies which included veteran stars like Toneka Pires, Jasmine Corbett, Lindsay Messina, Kelly Schreck, Amber Ameredes and others. Team Savage spent their Universe Weekend competing plus lots of South Beach and pool party time together. With nearly 500 competitors, Figure Universe Top 5 Finalist Lori Harder declared, "We met the greatest people from all over the globe!" But, Ms. Bikini Short Class Winner Annette Perry was even more ecstatic. "I had an absolute blast. This weekend was really an experience of a lifetime for me, and I will never forget it!"

Six Year Journey |
Sometimes when following the Fitness Universe Tour, you see ladies who are talented and awe inspiring from the beginning. And, then there are competitors who have the spirit and special drive to transform themselves in ways they never expected. Amber Emeredes seems to improve not only her athletic performance skills but her appearance and stage disposition with every subsequent show. And, 2007 was a memorable one for her in many ways. "Last year was incredible year for me - placing 6th at Fitness Universe, Top 10 at Ms. Bikini Universe, 3rd at Fitness America and 4th in Ms. Bikini America!, Amber exclaimed. "With this amazing six year journey in Fitness Universe shows, I |
have gained so much self-confidence, determination, and motivation which carries over to all aspects of my life, my friends, family and my patients whom I care for at my Occupational Therapy job. In this sport, there is so much emphasis on the outward appearance. But in the end, it is all about inner beauty, how one feels about herself, and how one treats others. When you have those qualities, you have then found a true winner! And that is why I love competing with Fitness America! Right now, I am gearing up for another exciting year and will compete in Fitness and Bikini at the Atlantic, Kumite, and Universe. And, I have all six of my Mom's sisters and my Grandmother coming to the Universe to cheer me on." Amber's fulfilling journey continues . . .

"My husband travels with me to my competitions, too, and is very supportive with my fitness lifestyle. 10th Anniversary Universe |
It is common knowledge in the fitness industry that in 1989 the Fitness America Pageant was created as a made-for-television production for ESPN International and soon grew into a regional series of shows. And with this growth in popularity among competitors and television viewers, the network wanted another major fitness show. So, in 1999, the Fitness Universe Pageant was introduced to the women's fitness community and welcome competitors from around the world. Since then, many of the most talented and beautiful fitness women have won this prestigious show. This year in Miami, the Fitness Universe Pageant will celebrate its 10th Anniversary and welcome many of the former champions to the stage. Kelly Gigliant was a former Disney World dancer when she won the first FUP and showed her incredible performance skills. Erika Marcantonio was a former Miami Heat Cheerleader and Katie Uter had been competing since she was 19 and the FUP was her first international level win. Carolyn Evans had lived around the world with her parents and acquired extensive dance experience and Sheri McCall Vuvick was a former competitive gymnast and has won FUP an unprecedented two times! Wendi West started competing at the 1996 FAP ESPN Series and was untouchable at FUP. And, Rhonda Finlayson incorporated an eclectic routine and props while Dawn Butterfield is the only one to win both FAP and FUP titles. With the tremendous talent competing, this year's Fitness Universe Pageant in Miami will be the most exciting ever with ladies from the USA, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Asia and only one will become the 10th Anniversary FUP Champion!

Gunning for Number One |
You'd think after winning the Fitness Universe Pageant twice that it was time to let someone else take home the world class crown. But, Pittsburgh's home town star Sheri Vuvick is training with one objective in mind. "Winning the Fitness Universe title for the 3rd time would be such an honor.. Its the first big show of the year and always attracts top fitness athletes from around the world," said Sheri. This mother of two handsome boys trains with her husband, Bill, who's a mixed martial arts fighter which inevitable carries over onto Sheri's regimen, too. She explains, "Bill is my secret weapon.. With him by my side I feel as if I can conquer the world. We make a great team because he knows me better than
anyone. He pushes me to my absolute limit and then some. When you have someone that believes in you it makes you feel like you can achieve anything in life!" But, Sheri has always been an athletic person especially with the influence of her mom and uncle who owned and managed a competitive gymnastics gym when she was growing up. "I feel very fortunate to have had such an athletic upbringing. It is one of the main reasons I have been so successful in this sport. At a young age it taught me the true value of hard work and dedication and if I believe in myself I can accomplish anything in life," Sheri confessed. But all of this hard core, serious training has never cross the line for Sheri. She says they are limitations to it all. "I don't train like a bodybuilder, I train like an athlete. We do bodyweight (not body building ) exercises and polymetrics. One of my main goals going into these shows is to keep my femininity and thats why I choose to compete in a natural organization. I feel very strongly about steroids and unnatural federations. It is all about bettering your health not risking it." As for her lose last year to Dawn Butterfield, Sheri admits, "OK, well I am human and it wasn't the happiest moment of my life but it was a close competition and I did my best.. I've placed 2nd at the last 3 shows I've competed in. I'm not complaining! This year I'm gunning for that number one spot! I have a new trick I've been working on that's never been seen on the fitness stage, so you girls better be training hard, cause I am!"

As the 2000 and 2003 Fitness Japan Champion, Junko Hashimoto knows the feeling of winning on the competitive scene. But, since then she's failed to place in the Top 5 at the Fitness America or Fitness Universe. At the '07 FAP, Junko finished in 31st Place among a field of seasoned and new fitness women. But, the 39 year old aerobic and Pilates instructor says she competes against herself to better her performance in each consecutive show. Enjoyed Competing Too Much |
You'd think she was crazy because with no competitive fitness experience former cheerleader Amanda Saussy entered the Fitness America Pageant and went home loving it. "I enjoyed competing too much! The atmosphere was great. Everyone welcomed me like I had been competing for years," said Amanda. "As soon as I walked on stage, I was hooked." The Mississippi native was an active gymnast through elementary school, but when the family moved to another town, the new school did not offer gymnastics. So, Amanda became an acrobatic cheerleader throughout high school. Coming from an athletic family, she has always been encouraged by by her two older brothers,

both Marines and active athletes themselves. And Amanda's mother is even considering competing in a Fitness Masters Division (hint). "She looks great - incredible for 46 years old," bragged Amanda.
"What I loved most about competing in fitness is that I am completely responsible for my performance. As a cheerleader, I was dependent on the other girls on my squad," explained the 5'2", 122 lbs. college student. "The diet and conditioning is easy for me since I eat healthy all year anyway. And, training is simple, too, because of my experience." Amanda is currently training for the Fitness Universe Pageant in Miami . . . only her second fitness competition. |

Bosom Buddies |

According to many competitors, one of the greatest attributes about Fitness Universe Tour shows is the chance to spend time together with fitness friends and creating new friendships. At the recent Fitness America in Hollywood, among the nearly 400 competitors, many pals teamed up for a fun weekend including Lianna Saadi (Canada), Sheri Vivick (Pennsylvania) and Amber Ameredes (North Carolina) (photo l-r) who have been competing together for nearly 5 years. Sheri and Amber used to train together when they both lived in Pittsburgh, but now the three friends get together at least twice a year - at the Universe and America. Lianna works as a marketing specialist for a Toronto-based processed food manufacturer. She says, "I don't want to let life pass me by." And the day following the competition she caught a flight to Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro - for real! Sheri's priorities are literally a bit more "down-to-earth" as a stay at home mom. The 5'7", 130 lbs. super star also works at her family's mixed martial arts and personal trainer studio. The 27 year old wife and mother of two boys was the first fitness competitor to win the Fitness Universe Pageant twice, in 2003 and 2006, and is aiming each year to capture the Fitness America Pageant, too. Although Lianna and Sheri did well at FAP (9th and 2nd, respectively), it was Amber who was most excited with her very first Top 5 finish. The 30 year old occupational therapist had such a polished routine this year and beautiful shape and appearance that she was able to take home 3rd Place honors just behind her dear friend and former training partner Sheri. The tears were flowing on stage from both ladies when the results were announced not only for their accomplishments but their shared joy after many years of training and competing together. Lianna, Sheri and Amber truly represent Fitness America camaraderie and spirit.

Classic Bikinis |
For the first time at Ms. Bikini America, the Open Class (Short, Medium and Tall) and Classic winners all competed for the overall title and to the astonishment of everyone watching the show, age conquered youth! A striking and exotic looking Amelia Powers captivated the judges and their scores knocking off some veteran bikini stars including Janelle Nicolo (Short), Siena Perezcano (Medium) and Monica Cariveau (Tall). Janelle (26 years, '07 MBU 2nd), Siena (26 years, '05 MBU) and Monica (29 years, '07 MBU 2nd) know the smell of victory oh so well, but they never thought that someone nearly 10 years their senior would take the title. The 35 year old Amelia was shocked with her win and exclaimed backstage, "How wonderful is this?!" But she is not new to experiencing the thrill of victory having been a 9-time Ms. Fitness Peru and last summer won the new Ms. Bikini Saratoga (New York) show. |

| Amelia is a wife and mother and very worldly woman having lived in South America and Europe and speaks fluent Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English. Ava is a Florida fitness model and appears in a plethora of magazines, cover, television and print advertising campaigns and other commercial projects. She's Back for More |

Sometimes in life you get tired of your comfort zone and just want to try something new. And so it is with Toneka Peres . After many successful and fulfilling years competing on the Fitness Universe Tour, she experienced what she felt was a disappointing finish at the '05 FAP. "I was bummed and really felt I should have done better," said Toneka months after the show. So, she packed up her dancing shoes and costumes and went the NPC way of "fitness". Toneka converted her body into the muscular appearance preferred by NPC/IFBB bodybuilding judges and took the stage at the NPC "fitness" show held at the Arnold Classic. But after experiencing the other side of the sports, she had another change of heart and mind. Toneka confessed, "It just wasn't for me. I wasn't comfortable with the whole scene. I know now where I belong." So, she strapped |

Now, with a new veal in her spirit, the Massachusetts native is preparing for FAP in Hollywood once again. But this time it is with a warm heart in knowing that she's competing among friends and with the camaraderie she's missed. Welcome home, Toneka! |

Same Body, Different Look |
There is such a brouhaha over a "no muscle look" among some competitors preparing for Fitness America Pageant and Ms. Bikini that some of them are considering not competing. Some of these veteran competitors who have recently gained muscle are scared that the existing FAP judging criteria of less muscle and a more feminine appearance is not for them. "I like my muscular body and have trained hard. But I did not do well in the past couple of shows. So, I am switching to NPC and IFBB. They like my muscle look!", according to a recent e-mail message received by FAP officials.
Well, the writer is probably correct. Fitness and Ms. Bikini America judging criteria has always outlined a preference for a softer, feminine and sexier appearance. This is nothing new. It has long been established that women who gravitate to the muscle look do not fare well at FAP and MBA. And, now with the new swimsuit policy prohibiting those stringy, high strapped designs, there may be a false impression that the judging criteria has changed.
Because FAP and MBA shows are made-for-television events and are seen around the world on ESPN International and other sport networks, concern is that the feature competitors are attractive for a mainstream viewer audience. However, for ladies who prefer a muscular body, they are welcome to compete in the new Musclemania Figure Division and, of course, for the serious bodybuilder, the Musclemania Women Division. Both divisions are judged by bodybuilding trainers and former competitors. However, FAP judges represent a broad balance of esteemed coaches and trainers with credentials in gymnastics, dance, acrobatics and cheer, choreographers, fitness media, commercial agents and talent scouts, photographers, producers and others. MBA judges include many of the same judges as FAP plus pageantry experts, fashion designers, commercial media and others.
Nothing has changed with FAP and MBA judging standards. For more clarification, please call FAP offices (888) 770-9000.

It started nearly 10 years ago when a 19 year old college student saw Fitness America on ESPN and decided to compete. Katie Uter finished among the Top 20 and has never turned back. Now the reigning Ms. Bikini Universe and former Fitness Universe Pageant Champion helps train and coach Team Louisiana Explosion. Among active team members are Keri Bourg and Angelina Harvey, two very popular fitness and bikini competitors who credit their entry into fitness shows as a turning point in their lives. Said Keri, "These shows have given me a lot self confidence and really taught me to enjoy life." Angelina is a college student and finds that competing helps to relax her state of mind. "Training and competitions balances my life", says claims. But with Hurricane Katrina, these Delta regional fitness stars felt that preparing for shows have helped them keep everything in perspective. "Through the toughest parts of the storm's aftermath, training really helped my family, friends and I through the recovery," said Katie. "It was one of the few constants in our lives."

First for Figure |
It took a long time to convince the promoters, but the first annual MM Superbody Figure Championships was finally held at the Universe Weekend. With a smooth transition of some former Ms. Bikini competitors into Figure girls, there was little confusion with the criteria and most were comfortable with the judges results. Among the Top 3 was an all-star line-up including '05 Ms. Bikini America Heather Green, '02 Fitness Canada Champion Ocean Bloom and new comer
Elaine Seth. Said Heather following the show, "I just love this new division because I don't have force myself to stay soft. I am naturally more muscular, so this is perfect for me." Ocean was more than disappointed after placing out of the Top 20 in the Fitness Universe Pageant but ecstatic to nudge Heather for the overall Figure title. Heather is a wife and mother of two from Tampa and Ocean a personal trainer from British Columbia, Canada. Some Figure contestants were testing the new division. Said Ms. Bikini Universe Classic Kathy Fehringer, "I just wanted to try it out and now I know the bikini is for me and my body." MM Figure is now featured at all MM regional and national events.

Magical Performance |
In the tradition of great Romanian gymnasts, Vanda Hadarean walked onto the Fitness Atlantic Pageant stage with the kind of poise and confidence she learned as an experienced Olympic level gymnast. Currently residing in Ottawa, Canada, the 5'3", 112 lbs. tumbler breezed through competitions like Neutron Fitness, FAME Canada, Ms. Fitness Canada and other northern events before deciding to take on American fitness competitors. To say her routine was breath taking is an understatement. Mixed with sensational gymnastic moves, dance transitions and acrobatics, Vanda's performance was magic. It was the buzz among the standing-room-only audience. Vanda coaches gymnastics at a professional gym and wants to pursue a career in sports marketing. Already she was asked to appear in two video productions and two talent agencies are competing to sign her as a client. Because of prior obligations to perform with a gymnastics dance troupe in France, Romania and other European countries, Vanda will not be competing at Fitness Universe and, instead, will bring her natural beauty and amazing skills to the Fitness America in Hollywood.

Back For More |

As a high school and college student, she was a competitive gymnast. But in her post college years, Sherri Vucich wanted to stay competitive. "I saw Fitness America in magazines and TV and it really caught my attention. I thought 'I can do that!,'" admits Sherri. Immediately, she was a hit on the Fitness Universe Series including the South Beach, America and Universe. And with her natural athletic skills and elegant looks, Sherri was a natural Top 5 favorite in nearly every show and won the 2003 Fitness Universe Pageant. Taking time off to get married, the mother of two boys trains with her husband Bill who's an tough man fighter. "He makes me work so hard and really gets me into shape. |
| Right now he's pushing me to get ready for my return to the Universe," says Sheri. Her beautiful beach blond looks will be a popular choice for the eclectic South Florida judges and with Bill at her side, she may be tuned in and ready for a repeat win. |

Competing Completes Me |
| She may not be an "overnight sensation", but FAP star Toneka Pires has learned that consistency is a key to succeeding at competitive fitness. Since her 3rd place finish last year, she has been preparing for the 2006 season with her main goal to be her career best at the Fitness Universe Pageant in Miami this June! Toneka says, "My focus is to be ready for the Fitness Atlantic and the Pittsburgh Kumite Classic as a nice prep for the Universe." Without a dance or gymnastics background, Pires placed 3rd at the recent Fitness America World Championships in Hollywood last November. "I am not an overnight sensation. I have worked hard on my routine and I keep making improvements each |
year to my body," says Toneka. But in as much as knowing athletic skills is always an advance to doing well, she goes on to say that, "I think I am the perfect example that you do not need to be a gymnast or dancer to succeed in this organization although!" Toneka adds, "Competing completes me. Being onstage gives me a feeling of success, no matter how I place. It makes me a better person and the Fitness America feels like home to me! " In addition to competing, Pires is busy modeling and working full time for Sprint.

Not Such a First Timer |

Last year, she was in the audience wondering if fitness competitions were for her. The former Olympic level and US National Team gymnast
hadn't been on a pommel horse, vault or parallel bars for a few seasons. But, a yearning to return to the floor exercises, her
favorite, brought Nikki Bongiovanni to watch the Fitness Atlantic Pageant. This year, she will be on stage having experienced two contests and knowing what it takes to become FAP Champion. As a Finalist in both the Fitness New York and Fitness America, Nikki had a
stirling first season. Now her sights are set on winning at the Atlantic (May 6) and Universe (May 23-24). She is a fitness director at
Bally's Total Fitness in Connecticut and mixes a daily dose of weight
training and practicing her routine plus an hour of various cardio
exercises six days each week. |

Mama Martin |

Congratulations go out to FAP Top 10 Finalist Andy Martin on the birth of her first son, Nash. At 7 lbs, 13 oz., and 22", it was a c-section for poor Andy, but it was all worth it. As she puts it, "Nash is absolutely perfect! But, my recovery is going to take a little longer, due to the c-section." Andy has competed in FAP events for 6 years and used to train with former FUP Champion Sherri McCall but since moving from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis, she's been on her own. But no matter the circumstances, Andy declares, "I am anxious to get back in the gym and start preparing for the Universe."

Fitness Talent vs. Bikini Beauty |
Nearly 100 of the hottest fitness women in the country competed at the Ms. Bikini America last month. And with winners like Katie Uter (Tall), Heather Green (Short & Overall) and Dawn Butterfield (Classic), there were no complaints about the results. Uniquely popular was the new Classic Division which highlighted beautiful and mature women at least 35 years of age. But like most fitness shows, the Ms. Bikini division has had a direct affect upon the Fitness America ranks which includes the dreaded Fitness Round. Since introducing Ms. Bikini 4 years ago, it has grown and now surpasses FAP competitors by 3-to-1. It is easier to diet for a swimsuit show than train for an athletic event. In fact, with 37 FAP competitiors, for the first time in its 16 year history, there was no Preliminary event. The athletic talent and natural beauty of the FAP contestants were at a premium this year. And, so both FAP and MBA will be broadcast on ESPN International, TSN Canada and other worldwide sports television networks in early 2006.

Five Times Sweeter |

You'd think she's had enough, but 3x Fitness Canada and former Fitness America Pageant Champion Sylvia Tremblay was in Hollywood last month to try to wrench the FAP crown once again. At 37 years of age, the swimwear designer is consistently a Top 5 Finalist since winning the 1998 Fitness Canada Pageant in Toronto. Now a role model for many other competitors, Sylvia says, "I really enjoy competing and as long as I am physically able, why not compete?" The former hair stylist now is a full time apparel designer specializing in competitive swimwear. "I love sport fitness, so I have taken it one step beyond and now create new outfits for other girls. It really gets me |
| excited when I see my creations on stage and especially when its being worn by a winner," claims Sylvia. She is also a trainer of some fitness competitors near her home in Quebec. |

She's Feeling Deazie |
Watching the routines at FAP, you could easily tell which competitors had a cheer background. And, one of the most outstanding was New Yorker Deazie Gibson who had a power-packed, energetic performance heavily based on dance, gymnastics as well as cheer. The 28 year old personal trainer attended Trinity Valley College in Texas, was on the school's National Cheerleading Championship squad and performed at the 1996 Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Currently, Deazie trains clients at many exclusive fitness clubs teaching step, body track, urban rebound, dance, yoga and spinning. "My philosophy of fitness is to keep it simple, fun, exciting and innovative," claims Deazie. "I enjoy mentoring and educating high school students about empowering themselves and increasing their self esteem within mind, body and soul." She competed at Ms. Fitness and NPC shows before joining FAP this year.

My Comeback, My Redemption |
"I was really bummed last year!" FAP Top 5 Finalist Toneka Peres now admits that she was very disappointed after missing the Top 20 at last year's show. There was some finger pointing the judges but in the end, Toneka got even more serious about fine turning her routine and performance and turn a "bummer" finish into a FUP and FAP Top 5 Finalist season. "Last year, I knew I needed to redeem myself and this year it all came to fruition," asserted Toneka. "The joy of competing is back! My ultimate goal was top 10 and to place third is truly an honor! I have a true passion for competing and have the upmost respect for every women that does. I love competing and look forward to improving each year! " The 28 year old telecommunications sales executive is a long time member of Team Savage and is always a spiritual leader among the competitors.

From Ruscha With Love |
| As a former world class gymnast, '99 FAP Champion Ruscha Kouril has had an intense, international caliber competitive career. After a 3 year absence, she returned to the recent FAP in Hollywood and captured 4th Place. "I decided a few months ago to prepare for the show, so I was really prepared," claimed Ruscha. The mix of competitors and performances are different than just a few years ago. Fitness America keeps changing." As a pre-teen and teenager, the Ruscha lived in Heidelberg, Germany, and was a 7-time German Gymnastic Champion but because she was an American citizen could not compete in the Olympics. But, she points out that, "It was |
really disappointing for me, but that's one of the reasons I really enjoy competing in Fitness America. It's a lot of fun and is always fair." But like German gymnastics, Ruscha had experience some politics even at FAP. She recalls, "When I won the show, a few of the veteran girls got real petty and did not like me because I was new and beat them." Currently, Ruscha still lives in Germany and works a personal trainer and dance instructor for a major health club.

Florida fitness star Heather Green has one of the hottest bodies in the sport. And, last weekend, she won the Ms. Bikini America (Short Class and Overall) where nearly 100 other bikini ladies competed at the famed Hollywood & Highland Center. This was Heather's second Short Class win in as many years of competing. The former high school cheerleader and track star has always been athletic along with her 4 sisters. Heather's husband Adam, a hospital radiologist, supports her fitness ambitions and travels to all her shows. "I've Had So Much Fun!" |
| Former FUP Champion Katie Uter came to Hollywood with intentions to enter both the Ms. Bikini America and Model America. But after winning the Ms. Bikini America - Tall Class on Saturday, she became booked with photo shoots, modeling jobs and commercial auditions. So, on Sunday morning, Katie called the event organizers to say, "I've had so much fun this weekend. But, I want to skip the modeling show because I am so busy with photographers. The weekend has been awesome, so much fun!" Katie started her competitive fitness career at the '97 FAP in California when she was just 19 years old. She currently lives with her daughter Brooke in |

In Her Prime |
She may have won the Fitness Midwest and South Beach Pageant this year, but that did not keep Dawn Butterfield from winning the first Ms. Bikini America Classic in Hollywood. This new division for ladies 35 years+ caught Dawn's attention since she has never competed in a Ms. Bikini contest. So she decided to take on the other mature women and extend her winning streak. The 36 year old wife, mother and electric company administrator has been competing for 10 years. But her ultimate goal . . . "I want to be the oldest woman to win the Fitness America Pageant," stated Dawn. |

Cha, Cha, Cha |
Once again, the Fitness America Pageant was opened with a exciting dance performance by the competitors. With professional choreography by music video and commercial choreographer Tony Gonzalez, the ladies took just 3 hours to complete their rehearsal and professionally prepare for the show open. An annual FAP and FUP tradition, the opening performance has been choreographed by other commercial stars like dance diva and former FAP Champion MaDonna Grimes who brings a sash of hip hop to the performance. Upon arriving for rehearsal, the competitors are evaluated for the abilities (dance, gymnastics, cheer, acrobatics, etc.) and then positioned according to the performance music and choreography. Then, it is a two hour crash course until all 40 contestant ants are in perfect harmony. The opening always pumps up the audience and sets up a show full of energy.

50th Time The Charmer! |
Last weekend's FAP in Hollywood was a dream come true for California star Deana Weiner. Celebrating her 50th fitness competition, she squeaked by New England star Rhianna DaCruz by less than 1 point! DaCruz was also the runner-up at FUP in Miami Beach earlier this year loosing to Rhonda Finlayson by just 1 point. The FAP Top 5 also included '03 Fitness New England Champion Toneka Peres (3rd) and '99 and '02 FAP Champions Sylvia Tremblay (4th) and Ruscha Kouril (5th), respectively. Weiner is a married mother of 3 teenage boys and owns her own mortgage company. She is a former NCAA collegiate gymnast and attended UCLA on an athletic scholarship. At 42 years old, Weiner said following her victory, "I am in dream - I can't believe it. I am just so happy!" Complete results are posted and new photos will be posted each day.

A Runner-Up Year |
Last year, Rhianna DaCruz captured a spot among the Fitness America Pageant Top 10. Then, this year in Miami Beach, she nearly won the Fitness Universe Pageant losing to veteran Rhonda Finlayson. And, last weekend at FAP, DaCruz barely lost to another extreme veteran, Deana Weiner. "I am so close, so its a little disappointing," said DaCruz. "But loosing to incredible girls like Rhonda and Deana encourages me to keep competing." Since began her competitive fitness career, DaCruz has competed in most New England fitness shows including the Fitness Atlantic, a regional tradition. But, winning the FAP and FUP drives her ambitions. Currently, the 25 year old personal trainer works with Boston trainer Cathy Savage who has changed DaCruz's routine over the past year. She holds school records at the University of Massachusetts where she earned her BS in Exercise Science.

Misti is a Jacksonville personal trainer while Stephanie a Miami college student majoring in broadcast journalism and theatre arts. Misti is a frequent fitness and bikini competitor who won the '04 Ms. Bikini Dixie, but as beautiful a woman as Stephanie may be, she had never competed before. Misti say's, "I am proud to be a stay home mom and enjoy staying in shape. I even started combat street fighting!" But, with Stephanie, the world is her stage. "I have traveled to every continent of the world with my grandmother and enjoy learning other cultures," she claimed. Misti's goals include being a good role model for her son Dylan while Stephanie wants to earn her law degree by the time she's 23! Two gracious ladies, two different lives . . . Florida style.

As a Golden Gloves boxer, Jessica Hatch was a highly competitive and very tough teenager. But, today, she is a beautiful, 24 year old college student and as attractive as any Texas debutante queen could dream to be. Last weekend, Jessica took her competitiveness and natural beauty to Houston and won both the Ms. Bikini Texas and Model Texas Championships. "It was a lot of fun, but now I am focusing on Hollywood," said Jessica referring to the Ms. Bikini America and Model America in Hollywood. Her fitness coach Eric Joly told us that Jessica has the best training ethic of any of his clients. "The girl's driven to succeed," he added. We'll get to see Jessica's drive live in November.
